About Dzharylhach National Nature Park

Dzharylhach National Nature Park is situated on Dzharylhach Island, located in the northern part of the Black Sea within the Kherson region of Ukraine. As Europe's largest sand island, this protected area boasts a remarkable mosaic of natural habitats including sandy beaches, saline lakes, coastal lagoons, and Mediterranean-type vegetation. The island stretches approximately 42 kilometers in length and varies between 1 to 4 kilometers in width, creating a narrow landform shaped by dynamic marine influences. Its relatively untouched ecosystems shelter a rich diversity of fauna such as rare birds, including various species of herons and gulls, as well as endangered mammals and rich fish fauna in surrounding waters. The park is also an important stopover for migratory birds traveling along the Black Sea flyway. Historically, the island has served as a natural refuge and holds archaeological remains tied to local steppe cultures. Outdoor recreation includes birdwatching, tranquil beachcombing, sailing, and hiking on fragile nature trails that highlight pristine coastal landscapes. With limited infrastructure, the park appeals primarily to avid eco-tourists seeking solitude and natural beauty away from urban centers. Conservation efforts focus on protecting the delicate sand dune systems and saline wetlands against erosion and human disturbance. Visitors are drawn by the park’s exceptional biodiversity, unspoiled shoreline vistas, and opportunities to experience one of Europe’s rare coastal wilderness areas.
